My full name is Melanie Chocron – Abalos. I am a book loving, travel aficionado, with two children, two fur babies and a husband by my side.
I have been fortunate to have many roles supporting children, from camp counsellor, to IBI Instructor Therapist, to Educational Assistant, RESPITE worker and teacher.
My love of writing developed from my (early) love of reading. As a young child I devoured books. I could finish chapter books within a day or so. I would immerse myself in the story, fill the shoes of the main character and get lost in the theme and scenes. The joy that I have always felt from reading a book is the same joy I want children to experience.
As a parent, reading to my own children fosters connection. Exploring the pictures and discussing the happenings of each page, opens the door to communication – learning more about the perspectives and feelings of my children. To write is to express and I want for my own children to see that self expression can come in many forms and that regardless of one’s current role, following and achieving a dream and doing hard things is always possible.
As a teacher, my favourite part of my program is my Literacy block – an opportunity where I can engage my students in current, meaningful, culturally relevant and thought provoking texts that cover everything from mental wellness to current issues, historical fiction and so much more! Similar to what I experience with my own children, discussing texts with my students opens a door for communication. It is a chance to learn from others, revise or solidify perspectives and develop knowledge. Every good lesson comes from a book. 😉
Through my writing, I wank to provoke thought, to excite and inspire my readers, both children and adults alike. I write because I love reading and my hope is that through my work, I can inspire a love of reading in more children.
Fun facts about me;
I want to own an animal sanctuary,
I secretly wish I lived on a farm… WITH farm animals,
I could eat sushi every.single.day and never get sick of it,
I have a mild obsession with coffee.
